Building & Executing a Product Innovation Pipeline

The Situation

The Canadian subsidiary of a multi-national CPG company was struggling to generate product innovation to fuel growth on its consumer health care portfolio. The past five years had yielded limited, and often unsuccessful innovation, and there were no consumer-validated ideas or technologies in the product pipeline. SPG was brought in to engineer the re-launch of the innovation process, from early ideation through to new product launch and to work with the multi-functional team build a multi-year pipeline of new products.

What We Did

  • Led an in-depth review and analysis of historic innovation, consumer research, competitive and category insights
  • Developed multiple brand and portfolio roadmaps
  • Created and led an ideation and funneling process that resulted in multiple quantitatively consumer validated winning product ideas
  • As “embedded executives”, project-managed and led the multi-functional teams through the full internal product development and launch readiness cycle
  • Negotiated external product development, licencing, and acquisition deals


A multi-year new product pipeline was created, resourced, and activated. Multiple new products were developed internally or licenced / acquired externally. Waves of new product launches will impact the market for years to come.
